Located in the oldtown Kaleiçi of Antalya, the centre was restored between 1993 and 1995 by architect Sinan Genim after the Suna and İnan Kıraç family acquired several old buildings and a church. In 1999, another house across the street was restored and put into use. In 2014, another house adjacent to the centre was restored and put into use as a library building.
AKMED, which has been operating for twenty years as a scientific, cultural and research centre focusing on the Mediterranean world, carrying out hundreds of projects, publishing, awarding grants and providing support, has continued its activities since the beginning of 2016 under the name Suna & İnan Kıraç Research Centre for Mediterranean Civilisations within Koç University.
